Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan joined with Lowell City Manager Kevin Murphy, elected leaders, members of the City Manager's Domestic Violence Task Force, and others today for an event in recognition of the annual “White Ribbon Day” Campaign.

Standing in the lobby of Lowell City Hall, attendees wore symbolic white ribbons in support of ending domestic and sexual violence and listened to speakers talk about prevention efforts and support for victims.

"We all need to be part of the solution in ending violence against women," said District Attorney Ryan. "The best form of early prevention is prevention in the home. We should be talking with our children about the unhealthy messaging being conveyed through the music industry, the internet, mass media and advertising. Whether these conversations are initiated at the dinner table or during a car ride, it's important that they occur. Counterbalancing these dangerous cultural influences is essential to preventing violence against women."

The White Ribbon Campaign is an annual event which began in Canada in 1991 after the targeted murder of fourteen female college students by a male gunman at the University of Montreal. Since that time, the White Ribbon Campaign has spread to other countries around the world to call on all men to work to end violence against women.
