Update in Apparent Homicide Investigation in Groton

GROTON - Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Groton Chief of Police Michael Luth have confirmed that yesterday, October 19 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Groton Police responded to a Lowell Road residence in Groton for an unresponsive female.

Upon arrival police encountered the alleged caller, identified as Gregory Fairbairn, 62, who lived at the home. Police subsequently located the victim, the caller’s wife, Mary Fairbairn, 57, deceased in the home from apparent stab wounds.

Mr. Fairbairn who was subsequently placed into custody has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, additional charges are expected.

This incident is being investigated as an apparent homicide. This is an ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Groton Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

Gregory Fairbairn is currently being held at the Middlesex Jail & House of Correction and is expected to be arraigned tomorrow in Ayer District Court.
