Suspect in Lowell Hit-And-Run Arraigned

WOBURN – Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that Calvin Sousa, 21, of Lowell, was arraigned today in Lowell District Court in connection with the alleged hit-and-run of a 15-year-old male bicyclist.

“The defendant allegedly struck down a young man who was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk with the intent to cause serious harm and then fled from the scene without stopping,” stated District Attorney Ryan. “As a result the victim sustained serious injuries.”

The defendant was charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, and leaving the scene of a personal injury. Judge Michael Brooks ordered the defendant held without bail pending a 58A dangerousness hearing scheduled for Wednesday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m.

On Friday, February 12, at approximately 2:00 p.m., Lowell Police responded to a report of a hit-and-run on Lawrence Street in Lowell. Authorities learned that an argument between the two individuals had allegedly taken place and resulted in the defendant running over the victim. The victim sustained serious injuries and was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and then to Boston Children’s Hospital.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
