Professional Boxer Arraigned On Assault And Battery Charge

WOBURN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced that boxer Richard “Dicky” Eklund, 58, of Lowell, was arraigned in Lowell District Court today on a charge of assault and battery on a family or household member.

Judge Neil Hourihan set bail at $500 cash and ordered the defendant to stay away from, and have no contact with, the victim. The next scheduled hearing for Eklund is Monday, September 21.

At approximately 4:00 p.m., on Thursday, August 20, Lowell Police responded to a report of a domestic assault.  The victim stated that the defendant had allegedly grabbed her by the arm and thrown her to the ground resulting in bruising on the victim’s arm and chest.

Eklund is known for boxing professionally and was portrayed by Christian Bale in the 2010 film The Fighter, for which Bale won an Academy Award.

The Lowell Police Department investigated this incident.

This charge is an allegation and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to the hearing today was Assistant District Attorney Brian Doxtader.
