Lowell Man Guilty for Domestic Violence Assault

LOWELL- Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan announced today that a Lowell man has been convicted for attacking his ex-girlfriend in Lowell in December 2012.

Robert Sigman, 40, of Lowell, was found guilty by a Middlesex Superior Court jury on charges of assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery, and threatening to commit a crime. Superior Court Judge Mary Ames scheduled sentencing for July 28 at 2pm in Lowell Superior Court.

“This defendant violently assaulted his ex-girlfriend in an unprovoked attack that left the victim with serious and lasting injuries,” said District Attorney Ryan.  “The fact that the attack was only halted because the victim’s child came home from school makes this even more troubling.  I commend the efforts of the Lowell Police officers who investigated this case and those who work hard every day to show perpetrators, and victims, that domestic violence will not be tolerated.”

According to authorities, on December 17, 2012, the defendant, who had been drinking, tried to enter his ex-girlfriend’s house. When she refused to let him in, he pushed his way into the apartment and began to attack her.  He forced the victim into her bedroom and threw her on the bed.  Over the course of several hours, he then punched and strangled her, broke her tooth, bit her and threatened to kill her. The attack continued until the victim’s 13 year-old daughter entered the bedroom. The victim was transported to the hospital where she was diagnosed with a fracture to her tailbone, and lacerations and abrasions.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney Tasnin Chowdhury and Assistant District Attorney Clarence Brown. The Victim Witness Advocate was Katie Keefe.
