Lowell Man Dies After Being Assaulted On June 25

WOBURN - Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor have announced that Craig Maille, 43, of Lowell died this morning after being assaulted on Lakeview Avenue in Lowell.

The suspect in the assault is Robert Girard, 24, of Lowell. Girard was charged with assault and battery resulting in serious bodily injury and was arraigned on June 26. He is in custody awaiting a pretrial conference on July 29. 

The incident occurred on Thursday, June 25, at approximately 2:00 p.m. There was an altercation at the scene which is under investigation. Authorities say the defendant and the victim were known to each other.

An autopsy will be performed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner after which a determination of whether any additional charges are warranted will be made.

The charge against this defendant is an allegation and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This incident is being investigated by the Lowell Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney's Office.
