Lowell Man Arraigned on Murder Charge in Connection with Lowell Fatal Stabbing

LOWELL- Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent William Taylor announced today that a Lowell man has been arraigned on a charge of murder in connection with the stabbing death of a Lawrence man.

The case is scheduled for a probable cause hearing on August 18 in Lowell District Court.

“We allege that the defendant stabbed and killed the victim during a drug robbery,” said District Attorney Ryan.  “This arrest was due to solid police work by Officers from the Lowell Police Department and State Police detectives assigned to my office. These investigators  worked non-stop, following leads throughout the ensuing 24 hours to effectively  build a solid case against this defendant.  These collaborative efforts led us to identify a suspect, make an arrest and  file these very serious charges.”

“Once again, our partnership with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police has led to a cooperative effort to bring charges against this defendant,” Superintendent Taylor said.  “I applaud the investigators and prosecutors involved and thank them on behalf of city of Lowell.”

According to authorities, at approximately 10:15pm on Thursday evening, Lowell Police received a 911 call from a man who stated he had been the victim of a stabbing.  Police responded to Woburn Street, near Route 495, where they located the caller, later identified as Hector Almedina, 27, of Lawrence, with apparent stab wounds. He was transported to Lahey Clinic in Burlington where he subsequently died at approximately 4:00am on Friday morning.

The Office of the Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of the victim's death.

Lowell Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the District Attorney’s Office launched an immediate investigation into the circumstances of the incident.  Through that investigation it was allegedly discovered that the defendant had stabbed the victim numerous times following an attempted robbery.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The case is being investigated by Lowell Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney Tom O’Reilly.  The Victim Witness Advocate is Katie Keefe.
