Investigators Continue to Seek Dion Smith, Now Charged with Murder in Connection with Death of Malden Man

MALDEN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Malden Chief of Police Glenn Cronin have confirmed that a warrant for murder has issued for 33 year-old Dion Smith of Boston for the stabbing death of 79 year-old Ronald Gilbert of Malden. The charge comes after an extensive investigation by Malden Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives, and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office - with assistance from the Massachusetts State Police Crime lab.

The investigation began on February 22, 2023 when police were called to Kennedy Drive for an odor coming from Gilbert’s apartment. Inside, Gilbert was located deceased with obvious signs of decomposition.  The case was referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner who observed what appeared to be over 30 stab wounds to his body. Based on a timeline constructed by investigators, it appears Gilbert was killed in late December of 2022. The investigation has also revealed that Smith was not a resident of the building and the two did not appear to be known to each other.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) has accepted the case and a ruling on the cause and manner of death is pending.

A warrant had previously issued for Smith for the charge of larceny in connection with the theft of Gilbert’s motor vehicle related to the same incident.

Police are continuing to actively looking for Mr. Smith at this time. Anyone with any information about his whereabouts should not approach him and should immediately contact Malden Police at 781-322-1212 or Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office at 781-897-6600.

Dion Smith is described as a balding, black male with brown eyes and is 5 feet, 9 inches tall and weighs 165 pounds.

This is an active and ongoing investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the District Attorney’s Office and Malden Police.
