Former Arlington Teacher Arraigned For Alleged Sexual Assault Of Teenager

WOBURN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that James Martin III, 36, of Woburn was arraigned today on charges of aggravated rape and abuse of a child and enticement of a child under the age of 16 years old.

Cambridge District Court Judge Roanne Sragow set bail for Martin at $250,000 with conditions to include that Martin stay away and have no contact with the victim or witnesses in this case, stay away and have no contact with children under the age of 16, have no employment or volunteer work with children under the age of 16, use no alcohol and no drugs and submit to random screens, stay away from Arlington and Woburnpublic school properties, wear a GPS bracelet, and not possess a phone or other device capable of accessing the internet, applications, or social media. The next scheduled court hearing for Martin is April 6.

“The dynamics described in this alleged incident fit a pattern which is common with online ‘predators’ who are charged with sexual crimes,” said District Attorney Ryan. “The adult is someone who has had or who does develop a friendly relationship with high-risk youth.  These characteristics of exploitation are more reason than ever for adults to have regular and ongoing conversations with young people so teenagers understand that they can be manipulated, even by people they may know.”

Arlington Police Chief Fred Ryan added, “This is a disturbing case in which an adult, trusted with the care of children, allegedly took advantage of that trust."

Martin was arrested by the Arlington Police Department on Thursday, March 5, following an investigation into a report that Martin had sexually assaulted a teenager in Martin’s vehicle in Arlington in January. Martin had been employed by the Arlington Public Schools between 2011 and 2013 and authorities say he had periodic communication with the alleged victim by using social media since leaving his job as a teacher in Arlington two years ago.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is considered innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney Jeff Bourgeois. The Victim Witness Advocate is Theresa Corcoran. The Child Interview Specialist is Margaret Leavitt.
