Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan joined Belmont Police Chief Richard McLaughlin and Belmont High School Assistant Principal John Muldoon on January 14 at Belmont High School for a seminar for families on the topic of "social host responsibility."

The discussion at the event focused on encouraging adults to make good choices regarding entertaining minors.

District Attorney Ryan and other speakers reminded members of the audience that it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to be served alcohol in Massachusetts.  District Attorney Ryan added, "The ramifications of serving underage drinkers go beyond what may happen legally or even in civil court if minors are served.  Just as important, parents need to think about the values they are instilling.  My office will continue to work closely with police departments, school districts, community leaders, and families in order to encourage adults to make smart choices when providing refreshments to minors.  We are all working together on instilling values which will lead to responsible behavior by young men and young women."
