Bedford Home Invasion Suspect Arraigned

WOBURN – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Bedford Police Chief Robert Bongiorno have announced that Vini Proeung, 20, of Lowell, was arraigned today in Concord District Court on charges of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault to maim, armed and masked robbery, home invasion, use of a firearm in a felony, and possession of a firearm without a license. Judge Sabita Singh ordered Proeung held without bail until a dangerousness hearing on Tuesday, July 28, and took a motion by the Commonwealth to revoke bail in a pending Lowell District Court case under advisement.

“While this is still an active and ongoing investigation, we believe this defendant took part in a home invasion in Bedford and participated in an assault on three people who were inside,” said District Attorney Ryan. “Those victims are still recovering from their injuries which included a victim being shot.”

“This was an extremely unusual incident for Bedford. Bedford is a safe, family-oriented town that consistently ranks as one of the safest communities in the nation,” Police Chief Bongiorno said. “So when someone decides to violate the peace of the evening in our community, we will act very swiftly and aggressively to send a message that this kind of behavior will simply not be tolerated.”

On July 22, at approximately 2 a.m., the Bedford Police Department arrived at a residence in Bedford and found a man outside injured who told officers that other people were injured inside due to a home invasion. Three individuals were transported to a hospital. Officers recovered a shotgun which they believe is connected to this incident.

Proeung is the only individual who has been charged in connection with this incident.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

This incident is being investigated by the Bedford Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.

The prosecutor assigned to this hearing today was Assistant District Attorney Joe Gentile.
