Waltham Man Sentenced to 16-18 Years for 2017 Stabbing

WALTHAM – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Waltham Chief of Police Keith MacPherson have announced that Ping Hong, 33, of Waltham, was sentenced on January 17, 2018 by Judge Joshua Wall to 16-18 years in State Prison, followed by two years probation, in connection with a 2017 near-fatal stabbing.  A Middlesex Superior Court Jury found the defendant guilty of armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery and four counts of violating a restraining order.

“The defendant’s brutal attack on a woman with whom he had previously lived was halted only by the victim’s pretending to be dead which convinced the defendant to stop stabbing her,” said District Attorney Ryan. “As a result of the efforts of investigators, the defendant was apprehended four days later at South Station and placed under arrest.”

Chief MacPherson added, “I would like to thank the Waltham Police Officers who investigated these violent incidents. Thanks to their tireless efforts, and the strength exhibited by the testimony of his two victims, the defendant will now serve a prison sentence reflective of the severity of his crimes.”

In the winter of 2017, the defendant was asked to move out of the home he had been residing in with two females who were known to him on Howard Street in Waltham. On March 16, 2017, the defendant returned to the home and argued with one of residents, a 31-one-year-old female, before punching her and leaving the home. On March 21, 2017 the defendant sent numerous text messages to the same female threatening to kill her. The defendant then requested that he be allowed into the residence to pick up his remaining belongings. The defendant arranged to meet at the Howard Street home at approximately 9:00 p.m. Fearing for the victim’s safety, due to the recent assault and threatening text messages, the second resident of the home, a 53-year-old-female, decided to meet the defendant to prevent another assault. When the defendant entered the home he was upset to not find the woman he had repeatedly threatened, he then pulled out a knife and stabbed the 53-year-old 22 times. The victim then played dead, at which point the defendant left the house and fled.

The 53-year-old victim then called the 31-year-old resident who contacted Waltham Police. When Waltham Police arrived they found the 53-year-old has sustained stab wounds to her arms, abdomen and forearm. She was transported to a Boston-area hospital where she underwent multiple surgeries.

Warrants were subsequently issued for the defendant’s arrest and he was apprehended on March 25, 2017 at South Station in Boston.

The prosecutors assigned to this case were Assistant District Attorneys Carrie Spiros and Raquel Frisardi. The Victim Witness Advocate was Danielle DeMeo. The paralegal was Alisha Quezada.
