Position Summary

The Middlesex District Attorney’s Office (MDAO) is seeking an experienced Superior Court Trial Assistant District Attorney (ADA) to prosecute serious felony cases. This position requires 4 to 6 years of superior court trial experience, including significant jury trial experience.

The Superior Court Trial ADA is responsible for handling complex criminal cases from investigation through trial and sentencing. This includes overseeing grand jury presentations, pretrial litigation, and motions practice, as well as engaging with victims, law enforcement, and other stakeholders in the criminal justice system.

Candidates must demonstrate a strong commitment to public safety, fairness, and justice, as well as the ability to manage a high caseload in a fast-paced environment.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Represent the Commonwealth at all stages of felony prosecutions in Middlesex Superior Court, including but not limited to:
    • Conducting grand jury investigations and securing indictments.
    • Handling arraignments, bail hearings, and dangerousness hearings.
    • Conducting pretrial motions practice, including suppression and evidentiary hearings.
    • Litigating jury and bench trials, plea negotiations, and sentencing hearings.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement, investigators, victim witness advocates, and court personnel to ensure justice and fairness.
  • Work closely with victims and witnesses, particularly in cases involving violent crime.
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced ADAs as needed.
  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda related to emerging criminal law issues.
  • Maintain professionalism and uphold the highest ethical standards in all prosecutorial decisions.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the Massachusetts Bar and in good standing.
  • 4 to 6 years of superior court trial experience, including significant felony jury trials.
  • Strong litigation and advocacy skills, including oral and written legal argument.
  • Ability to analyze complex legal issues and respond effectively under pressure.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment to public service and community engagement.
  • Availability for occasional evening and weekend work as needed

Preferred:

  • Experience handling cases involving violent crime, firearms offenses, or drug trafficking.
  • Experience mentoring or supervising junior attorneys, law clerks, or interns.
  • Fluency or proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, Mandarin, Cantonese, or Cape Verdean Creole.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • ADAs are expected to travel between court locations and other required sites within Middlesex County.
  • Must comply with all office policies, the Massachusetts Rules of Professional Conduct, and ethical guidelines for prosecutors.
