James DeVellis Convicted in Connection with Sexual Assault
LEXINGTON – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lexington Chief of Police Michael McLean have confirmed that yesterday a Middlesex Superior Court jury found James DeVellis, 59 of Wakefield, guilty of rape and indecent assault and battery following a four day trial in Middlesex Superior Court.
DeVellis was convicted of sexually assaulting a 21-year-old male victim who was known to him at his home in Lexington.
In April of 2020, the 53-year-old defendant invited the victim, a close family friend, to his Lexington home to help him clear out furniture and other items before the defendant was set to move out of the home. At some point during the visit, the victim and the defendant consumed alcohol and the victim lost consciousness. While the victim was not conscious the defendant removed his clothes and sexually assaulted him.
In April of 2022, the victim learned that the defendant had allegedly committed other sexual assaults on other men, including his own brother. The victim was also aware that the defendant had been accused of inappropriate conduct while he was working as an orthopedist at a practice in Woburn and that that conduct has resulted in the defendant giving up his medical license. After leaving medicine, DeVellis assumed the role of CEO and co-owner of Thompson Square Partners, a commercial real estate company.
The victim reported the 2020 assault to Lexington Police. James DeVellis was arraigned in December 2022.
Sentencing for James DeVellis has been scheduled for Monday, June 22 at 2:00 p.m. in courtroom 530 at Middlesex Superior Court in Woburn.
The prosecutor assigned to this case is Yashmeen Desai. The Victim Witness Advocate is Joseph Bernstein.
