Reports, Findings and Public Records Regarding Officer Involved Shootings
It is the statutory obligation of the District Attorney to investigate officer-involved shootings. District Attorney Marian Ryan is committed to doing this in a way that ensures both transparency and accountability. To that end, in December 2018, District Attorney Ryan began the practice of requesting inquests for these fatal incidents.
An inquest is a judicial proceeding conducted for the purpose of finding the facts and circumstances surrounding a death and determining whether a crime occurred. Given the heightened public interest in these cases we believe that a review of the facts and circumstances of the case by a neutral party is appropriate and furthers transparency and accountability.
