Statement on Medford Fatal Drowning

The Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Medford Chief of Police Jack Buckley have confirmed that yesterday shortly after 8:00 p.m. Massachusetts State Police, Medford Police and Tufts University Police responded to Mystic Valley Parkway in the area of the Tufts Sailing Pavilion for a possible drowning.

Divers subsequently recovered the 18-year-old Medford man in approximately 20 feet of water, first responders immediately began life saving efforts and the male was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital where he was pronounced dead around 10:00 p.m. The preliminary investigation suggest the man was unable to swim and that he entered the water and immediately appeared to be in distress before going beneath the surface.

The Massachusetts State Police Dive Team,  Medford Fire Department,  Somerville Fire Department and  Cambridge Fire Department assisted with this incident.

This is an ongoing investigation. As no foul play is suspected the name of the deceased will not be released by this office.
