Statement on Fatal Newton Industrial Incident

NEWTON – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan, Newton Fire Chief Gino Lucchetti and Newton Police Chief Howard L. Mintz have confirmed that today at approximately 8:00 a.m. Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office were notified by the Newton Police of a fatal incident involving a construction worker that occurred at Winchester Street in Newton.

The preliminary investigation suggests that the decedent, a 55-year-old-male, had been working in the foundation of a Newton residence when a wall collapsed, pinning him into the ground. He was pronounced dead on the scene. This case has been referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, who will determine the cause of death.

This is an open investigation being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Newton Fire Department, the Newton Police Department. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will also conduct an investigation into this incident.
