Statement on Everett Fatal Shooting

EVERETT – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Everett Chief of Police Steven Mazzie have confirmed that at approximately 8:40 a.m., Everett Police responded to a report of a shooting on Central Avenue in Everett. Upon arrival authorities located the victim, identified as Ersilia Cataldo Matarazzo, 50, inside her car located in the driveway. The victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. Everett Police and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office immediately began an investigation.

The suspect has been identified as the decedent’s estranged husband Emilio Matarazzo, 55, of Peabody. Matarazzo came to the Everett Police Station at 10:30 a.m. and has subsequently been charged with murder. He will be arraigned tomorrow in Malden District Court.

As a precautionary measure the Everett High School was locked down in the immediate aftermath of the shooting. The lockdown has since ended.

The investigation suggests that this is not a random incident of violence and that there is no danger to the public. This is an open and active investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Everett Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
