Second Suspect in November 2017 Cambridge Homicide Arraigned
CAMBRIDGE — Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Branville Bard Jr. have confirmed that Osiris Chambers, 17, of Cambridge, was arraigned on Thursday, November 29th in Middlesex Superior Court in connection with the November 16, 2017 shooting death of 28-year-old Malachi Mims, of Cambridge. Chambers is charged with murder, armed assault with intent to rob, possession of a firearm, possession of ammunition and possession of a loaded firearm.
Assistant Clerk Magistrate Michelle Goldman ordered the defendant held without bail. Clerk Magistrate Goldman also ordered the defendant to have no contact with the victim’s family or any witnesses. The next scheduled hearing in this case is January 17.
Chambers’ co-defendant Kevin Reddick, 18, of Cambridge, has been charged with murder, armed assault with intent to murder, two counts of armed assault with intent to rob, possession of a firearm without a license, possession of ammunition and possession of a loaded firearm. Reddick was located on Stuart Street in Boston on December 31, 2017 and placed under arrest.
On November 16, 2017, at approximately 7:30 p.m. Cambridge Police responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Tremont and Hampshire Street in Cambridge. Upon arrival they located the victim who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Through their investigation authorities learned that the two defendants had allegedly arranged to meet the victim for a drug transaction. The victim and a witness picked up the two defendants on the evening of the shooting and drove to the Tremont and Hampshire Street area. The two defendants then allegedly attempted to rob the victim of marijuana at gunpoint. A search of the motor vehicle resulted in authorities locating a fingerprint that was a match to Reddick.
Video surveillance of the area surrounding the location captured two males fleeing the scene following the shooting. One suspect was wearing a black jacket and the other wearing a teal-colored jacket.
A search warrant was executed at Reddick’s home which resulted in authorities locating a black jacket and teal-colored jacket matching the attire seen by the two suspects fleeing the scene of the shooting. Both jackets tested positive for gunshot residue. A DNA analysis of the teal jacket would eventually result in a match to Chambers. Chambers was directly indicted by a Middlesex Superior Court Grand Jury on November 19, 2018. Chambers was in custody for an unrelated offense when he was indicted.
These charges are allegations and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
