Man Charged in Connection with Apparent Random Assaults in Waltham

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan at Press ConferenceWALTHAM – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Acting Waltham Police Chief Kevin O’Connell today announced that Clauvens Janvier, 24 of Waltham, has been charged in connection with a series of unprovoked attacks and related crimes that occurred in the city of Waltham throughout the month of November 2020.

On December 11, 2020, Janvier was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and assault and battery in connection with a single incident that occurred at a parking garage located on Turner Street in Waltham, on November 11, 2020, where the defendant allegedly physically assaulted an 18-year-old male and struck him with the non-blade side of a machete.

After an investigation conducted by Waltham Police, the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and Massachusetts State Police that included an extensive review of cell phone data and records, reviewing surveillance video, forensic testing, the execution of several search warrants and interviewing victims and witnesses, investigators determined that the defendant was allegedly responsible for an additional 10 attacks that occurred across the city of Waltham.

As a result of the subsequent investigation into this matter, Clauvens Janvier is now charged in connection with the alleged assaults of ten additional male victims that occurred throughout the month of November 2020. During the assaults, the defendant allegedly attacked the multiple victims using blunt objects in addition to committing other alleged physical assaults that caused serious injuries in numerous cases. These attacks include the first reported assault at Gardencrest Apartments located at Middlesex Circle, an assault on a United States Postal Service mail carrier, several incidents where victims lost consciousness and where the victims required hospitalization. In total, investigators believe that the defendant is allegedly responsible for 11 attacks, including the November 11 attack for which he has already been charged.

Janvier has also been charged with additional firearm charges in connection with an incident that occurred on November 24 where the defendant allegedly fired a gun directed at a motor vehicle leaving a Willow Street gas station after the defendant had a verbal altercation with the man at the gas station parking lot. As a result, the defendant has been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony and discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling.

During the execution of a search warrant of the defendant’s car in connection with the November 11 incident, police located a machete, ammunition and a stolen firearm that they were able to connect to the alleged incident at the gas station where the defendant is now charged. Following his arrest, the defendant was found dangerous at a hearing on December 21, 2020 and has remained held without bail since his arrest.

The defendant is expected to be arraigned in Waltham District Court at a later date on these additional charges. His next scheduled court date in his open case is March 24 for a status hearing.

In total, the defendant now faces four counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, five counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, one count of assault with a dangerous weapon, four counts of assault and battery, two counts of possession of a firearm, two counts of possession of a loaded firearm, one count of possession of ammunition, one count of improper storage of a firearm, one count of discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling, one count of possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, one count of receiving stolen property, one count of carrying a dangerous weapon during a warrant arrest.
