Man Arraigned on Charges of Murder and Assault and Battery with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury in Connection with Fatal Stabbing in Groton

GROTON - Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Groton Chief of Police Michael Luth have confirmed that Gregory Fairbairn, 62, of Groton, was arraigned today in Ayer District Court on charges of murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, causing serious bodily injury in connection with the October 19 death of Mary Fairbairn, 57, of Groton.

Judge Margaret Guzman ordered the defendant held without bail and ordered the defendant to undergo a competency evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital. The next court date in this case is November 8, 2019.

On October 19 at approximately 5:30 p.m., Groton Police responded to a Lowell Road residence in Groton following a 911 call of an unresponsive female. Upon arrival police encountered the alleged caller, identified as the defendant, Gregory Fairbairn, 62, who lived at the home. Police subsequently located the victim, the caller’s wife, Mary Fairbairn, deceased in the home from multiple stab wounds. Mr. Fairbairn was placed into custody and charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. The preliminary investigation revealed that the defendant allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times in the bedroom of their home before calling 911. Upon arrival police allegedly located a knife on the defendant before placing him into custody. The charges in this case have been upgraded to murder and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.

This case is being investigated by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Groton Police, Massachusetts State Police Detectives assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services Section.

These charges are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutors assigned to this case are Assistant District Attorneys Joseph Gentile and Emily Jackson and the Victim Witness Advocate is Anne Foley.
