Lowell Man Arraigned In Connection with Alleged Assault and Battery on Three Month Old Son

LOWELL – Pedro Santiago, 27, of Lowell was arraigned yesterday in Lowell District Court on the charge of assault and battery on a child causing substantial bodily injury in connection with allegedly shaking his three month old son causing serious injury on November 30 at his residence on West Third Street in Lowell. Judge Michael Brooks set bail at $500 cash and ordered the defendant to comply with a Department of Children and Families service plan, to stay away from his children and to be placed on GPS monitoring. The next court date is scheduled for January 10, 2019.

On Friday November 30 at approximately 9:30 p.m. Lowell Police responded to a 911 call to a residence on West Third Street in Lowell for a report of an infant having trouble breathing. The preliminary investigation suggests that the infant had been home alone with his father, the defendant, when he noticed that the child was not acting normally and was having trouble breathing. The infant was transported to Lowell General Hospital and then flown  to Boston Children’s Hospital where he remains hospitalized.

Santiago was subsequently placed under arrest by Lowell Police on December 3, 2018. This is an ongoing investigation and no additional information will be released at this time.

The prosecutor assigned to yesterday’s arraignment was Assistant District Attorney Lyndsey Davis.
