Joint Statement: Investigation Underway Involving Apparent Drowning of Two People in Lowell

LOWELL – Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Lowell Police Superintendent Kelly Richardson have confirmed that two individuals were pulled from the Merrimack River this morning in what is being investigated as an apparent drowning.

At approximately 6:30 a.m. this morning, Lowell Police responded to a report of a body of a male discovered by a fisherman in the Merrimack River in the vicinity on Aiken Street behind LeLacheur Park in Lowell. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a second body of a female. The Lowell Fire Department responded to the scene and removed the bodies from the river. Both decedents were fully clothed and no was trauma observed. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner took custody of the decedents to determine cause and manner of death. The decedents have not been positively identified at this time.

This is an open and active investigation being conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, the Lowell Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office. This office does not release the identities of decedents when there is no suspicion of foul play.  No further information is being released at this time.
