Joint Release - Body Recovered in Freeman Lake, Believed to be Missing Kayaker

CHELMSFORD — Chief James M. Spinney and Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan report that the Chelmsford Police Department and fire, rescue and police mutual aid partners recovered the body of a man, believed to be a kayaker, on Freeman Lake.

On Monday, Oct. 3, at approximately 12:22 p.m., Chelmsford Police received a report that a man who had been boating on the lake was in distress. Police and Firefighters responded immediately and located a kayak in the area, but were unable to locate the boater.

Police and firefighters conducted an intensive search of the area of the lake where the man was last seen, and were assisted by the Chelmsford Police Drone Unit, the Massachusetts State Police Airwing, the Massachusetts State Police Underwater Recovery Unit and Lowell Fire Department dive team, two Chelmsford Fire Department boats and the Massachusetts Environmental Police, which provided a sonar buoy.

The body was located in about 13 feet of water at about 3:30 p.m. The body is in the custody of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner which will make a positive identification and determine a manner and cause of death.
