Fatal Road Rage Incident Under Investigation in Belmont

BELMONT - Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Belmont Chief of Police James MacIsaac today confirmed an investigation into an alleged fatal road rage incident that occurred today on Upland Road in Belmont.

At 4:22 p.m. today Belmont Police received a 911 call for man that had been struck by a car. Police immediately responded and located the victim a 35-year-old Boston man suffering from life threatening injuries in the roadway near the driver’s side of his vehicle, a Honda Civic. The injuries were apparently caused by being struck by another vehicle. First responders provided emergency assistance to the man who was transported to an area hospital shortly after where he later died from his injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, identified as Dean Kapsalis, 54 of Hudson, allegedly fled the scene before returning to the Belmont Police Department approximately 30 minutes after the incident. The preliminary investigation suggests that an alleged road rage incident occurred before Mr. Kapsalis and the victim engaged in a verbal altercation. Both men allegedly exited their vehicles before Mr. Kapsalis reentered his vehicle, a Dodge Dakota, and allegedly struck the victim.

Dean Kapsalis has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. He will be arraigned tomorrow in Cambridge District Court. This is an active and ongoing investigation. Additional charges are possible.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
