Twenty-Year-Old College Student Indicted In Connection With Stabbing Of Ex-Boyfriend

CAMBRIDGE – Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today that a twenty-year-old college student has been indicted by a Middlesex Grand Jury in connection with an incident in which she is alleged to have stabbed her ex-boyfriend multiple times. The incident occurred on the campus of MIT University where the victim is a student.

Anna Tang, a Wellesley College student from Indiana, was indicted by the grand jury on counts of home invasion, armed assault with intent to murder, and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury. An arraignment date for these Superior Court charges has yet to be set.

“We allege that the defendant traveled to the campus of MIT, entered her ex-boyfriend’s room, and began repeatedly stabbed him while he was in his bed sleeping,” District Attorney Leone said.

According to authorities, at approximately 6:28 a.m. on October 23, Cambridge Police responded to 500 Memorial Drive for a reported stabbing. The building is an MIT dorm building with multiple dorm rooms inside. Upon arrival at the scene, the victim was found in his room bleeding profusely from multiple stab wounds.

After speaking with the victim, Tang was established as a suspect when he indicated that she had attacked him and that she was his ex-girlfriend. Tang was later found in the same dorm building. Tang’s jacket was found covered with blood and a black folding “buck” knife was found in her backpack. She was immediately arrested and placed into custody by Cambridge Police. Several other knives were also recovered.

Upon further investigation, it is alleged that the defendant entered into the victim’s dorm room while he was asleep. The victim indicated that he awoke in his bed to find the defendant on top of him and repeatedly stabbing him. It is also alleged that Tang purchased the knives and a crossbow pistol in the days leading up to the attack.

The victim was transported to a Boston hospital where has been treated and released for his injuries.

Tang was arrested on October 23 and arraigned that afternoon in Cambridge District Court on charges of armed assault with intent to murder and home invasion. At her arraignment, Judge Sevelin Singleton ordered Tang held pending a 58A dangerousness hearing. At that 58A hearing on November 7, it was stipulated that the defendant was a danger to the community and Judge George Sprague ordered Tang held without bail.

An arraignment date for the Superior Court charges has yet to be set.

These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Kontz, chief of the Middlesex District Attorney’s Domestic Violence Unit. The victim witness advocate is Shawn MacMaster. The case is being investigated by MIT police and Cambridge Police.
