Former Tewksbury Little League President Pleads Guilty And Sentenced To Jail For Theft Of More Than $400,000
CAMBRIDGE – Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public today that a former president of the Youth Baseball League of Tewksbury has pleaded guilty and been sentenced to jail in connection with the theft of more than $400,000 from the league.
Wilfred Daley, age 59, of Andover, pleaded guilty yesterday in Middlesex Superior Court to two counts of larceny over $250. Superior Court Judge Thomas Connors sentenced Daley to one year in the House of Correction with four years probation from and after that sentence. Daley will also pay restitution of $162,000.
“All of those involved in youth sports must be counted on to put the needs of our children first,” District Attorney Leone said. “Wilfred Daley violated the trust of all those involved in Tewksbury Little League, serving himself rather than the kids that the funds were intended for.”
By pleading guilty today, Daley admitted to stealing approximately $423,000 from the Youth Baseball League of Tewksbury between 2002 and early 2006. Daley served as the president of the organization during that time period. Daley stole the funds by writing out checks to himself from the organization’s account as well as by using the organization’s debit card for personal purchases.
The theft was uncovered when police subpoenaed the league’s financial documents after a vendor complained that they had not been paid for services provided.
Daley was indicted by a Middlesex Grand Jury on December 12, 2006. Daley’s indictments came as a result of a nearly 8 month joint investigation by the Tewksbury Police Department and the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office’s PACT Unit.
The prosecutor assigned to this case is Assistant District Attorney John Verner, Chief of the office’s PACT Unit.
