Everett Man Charged With Murder In Connection With Thursday’s Everett Homicide
MALDEN – Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone informed the public that an Everett man was charged with murder today in connection with Thursday’s stabbing of Sean Mooney, 37, of Revere.
Jeffrey Raphael, 18, of Everett, was arraigned on a charge of first degree murder today in Malden District Court. He had been arrested in connection with the incident on Thursday, July 31, and arraigned on Friday, August 1, in Malden District Court on a charge of armed assault with intent to murder. He was ordered held pending a dangerousness hearing scheduled for today. On Saturday, Mooney was pronounced dead, resulting in the charge being upgraded and arraigned at today’s hearing. He was ordered held without bail by Malden District Court Judge Lee Johnson.
According to authorities, Everett Police responded to a 911 call at approximately 5:05 p.m. on Thursday, July 31, on reports of a man who had been stabbed in the neck. Police arrived at the corner of Ferry Street and Blanchard Avenue to find the victim, Mooney, suffering from a stab wound to the neck.
Mooney was transported to Whidden Memorial Hospital in Everett where he was treated for his injuries.
Everett Police and Massachusetts State Police commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the stabbing. Based on that investigation, they began a city-wide search for the suspect. A canine unit from the Massachusetts Transit Police also joined the search. At approximately 6:00 p.m., authorities apprehended Raphael inside 11 Foster Street in Everett. He was placed under arrest at that time.
Mooney was later transferred to Boston Medical Center for further treatment. He was pronounced dead on August 2.
Raphael’s next scheduled court date is September 9 for a probable cause hearing.
These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
The prosecutor assigned to the case is Assistant District Attorney Elizabeth Keeley. The case is being investigated by Everett Police and the Massachusetts State Police assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office.
