Boston Man Arraigned On First Degree Murder Charge In Connection With Somerville Homicide

CAMBRIDGE– Middlesex District Attorney Gerry Leone’s office informed the public today that a Boston man has been arraigned in Cambridge Superior Court in connection with the Somerville shooting death of John Micelin, 23, of Boston.

Jean Roy, 24, of Boston, was arraigned yesterday afternoon in Cambridge Superior Court on charges of first degree murder, armed assault to murder, and carrying a firearm without a license. Roy pleaded not guilty to all charges and Cambridge Superior Court Judge Isaac Borenstein ordered Roy to remain held without bail, as had been ordered at Roy’s Somerville District Court arraignment.

According to authorities, at approximately 4 a.m. on Sunday, May 6, Somerville Police received a 911 call from a resident to report an injured person on Walnut Street in Somerville.  Upon arrival at the scene, a Somerville police officer observed an injured individual with apparent wounds on the back of his head and neck.  The injured individual told the officer that Roy had shot him and his friend, Micelin.  Micelin was found in a car unresponsive and suffering from an apparent gun shot wound. Both Micelin and the other injured victim were transported to Massachusetts General Hospital by paramedics. Micelin was pronounced dead with the cause of death determined by the state’s Medical Examiner (ME) to be a single gunshot wound to the head.

Massachusetts State Police assigned to the District Attorney’s Office, Somerville Police, and Boston Police commenced an immediate investigation. Based on that investigation, it is alleged that Roy shot both men while inside a car. On the evening of May 10 at approximately 10 p.m., a warrant was issued for the arrest of Roy in connection with the incident. Hours later, Boston Police arrested Roy in connection with an unrelated incident in Boston.

Roy and the injured victim had been introduced a few weeks prior to the shooting.  The defendant and the injured victim had met in person and talked multiple times prior to May 6.

Roy was arraigned on May 11 in Somerville District Court on a charge of first degree murder where he was ordered held without bail by Somerville District Court Judge Maurice Flynn.  He was then indicted by a Middlesex Grand Jury on June 28.

These charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Roy will next appear in court on September 10 in Cambridge Superior Courtroom 12B for a Pretrial Hearing before Judge Borenstein.

The Assistant District Attorney assigned to the case is Joseph Gentile. The victim witness advocate is Daniela Bianco.
